Overview

Clear Telecommunications was hired to provide a custom Starlink installation at Gold Ridge Organic Farms — an 88-acre organic property located in the hills of Sebastopol, West Sonoma County. Known for its heirloom apples, olives, citrus, and lavender, the farm occupies elevated ridgetop terrain with panoramic views — but like many rural properties, it faced a common problem: no reliable internet access.

With no cable or fiber options available, and mobile signal coverage inconsistent at best, the farm turned to Starlink as the most effective way to stay connected. Our role as a professional Starlink installer was to ensure a durable, high-performance setup tailored to the landscape, power availability, and operational needs of the farm.

Challenges

Even in open farmland, installing Starlink comes with technical and logistical complexities — especially when there is no existing infrastructure nearby. The challenges at this site included:

• Lack of mounting structures: No rooftops or poles were available in the chosen field.

• Line-of-sight obstructions: Despite being open, the distant horizon included trees and hills that required precise positioning.

• Distance from power: The selected location was over 200 feet from the nearest available power source.

• Environmental exposure: The dish and all hardware would be exposed to wind, rain, direct sunlight, animals, and farm equipment.

• Cable protection: Ethernet and power lines needed to be safely buried and shielded for long-term durability.

• Future network integration: The installation had to accommodate Wi-Fi coverage, camera systems, and other farm infrastructure needs.
  

Our Starlink Installation Approach

We began the process with a full site survey to assess terrain, visibility, and access to power. Based on this, we developed a tailored solution that ensured optimal performance and long-term reliability:

1. Custom Pole Mounting

With no structures available, we installed a galvanized steel pole, securely anchored in concrete. This provided the height and stability needed for clear satellite line-of-sight and resilience against wind and weather.

2. Signal Alignment

Using the Starlink mobile app and our own diagnostics, we scanned the surrounding horizon for obstructions. The dish was precisely positioned and locked into place to ensure uninterrupted satellite connectivity.

3. Underground Power & Cabling

The installation site was over 200 feet from the nearest power source. We ran power and data lines through underground, UV-resistant conduit — protected by armored casing — to avoid exposure to weather, rodents, and machinery like tractors or mowers.

4. Weather-Resistant Enclosures

All exposed components were installed in NEMA-rated enclosures, offering protection from rain, dust, sun exposure, and debris commonly found in agricultural settings.

5. Network Integration

The Starlink router was connected to the farm’s existing network. We provided Wi-Fi extension and configuration support, allowing the farm to access internet across multiple areas and integrate future tools such as remote monitoring or security cameras.

Results

This Starlink installation successfully delivered reliable, high-speed internet to a remote section of the farm — where no other solution had worked. The system now supports day-to-day operations, communications, and future smart farming capabilities.
