The Challenge: Aging WiFi in a Busy Shared Environment

Clear Telecommunications was brought in to assess aging wireless infrastructure at a five-story residential community in Marin County with more than 200 units. The immediate priority was the main floor, where residents, staff, and visitors rely on connectivity throughout the lobby, administrative offices, salon, meeting spaces, restaurant, and nearby residential units.

The existing access points depended on wireless meshing instead of dedicated wired connections. That design limited backhaul performance and made reliable coverage difficult in a large, active building. Visible wiring around some access points also detracted from the property’s carefully maintained shared spaces.

A Complete WAN, LAN, Wired, and WiFi Assessment

We began with a detailed assessment of the currently installed infrastructure rather than treating the access points as an isolated problem. The review covered the internet connection and WAN, the wired LAN, switching, cable pathways, wireless access-point locations, coverage needs, and the way each component affected the rest of the system.

This broader view allowed us to separate wireless symptoms from underlying infrastructure constraints and build a design that could improve the main floor as one coordinated network.

The New Network Design

The new design focused on dependable wired backhaul, updated equipment, clean pathways, and coverage matched to how the main floor is actually used. The scope included:

• Upgraded wireless access points positioned for the lobby, offices, salon, meeting areas, restaurant, and adjacent residences.
• A dedicated hardwired connection for every access point, eliminating wireless meshing as the primary backhaul method.
• Core network switch upgrades to support the new wireless design and improve traffic flow.
• New and reworked cabling where required to create reliable pathways between network equipment and access points.
• A discreet installation plan that concealed both cabling and power from normal view.

Improving Performance Without Compromising the Property

In a residential community, technical performance is only part of a successful installation. Shared amenities need to remain welcoming, and network equipment should not become the visual focus of a lobby, restaurant, salon, or meeting room.

Each access point was hardwired, and the supporting cabling was routed out of sight. The completed installation improved wireless performance while also cleaning up the appearance of the main floor. Residents and staff received a stronger network, and the property retained the polished look expected in its shared spaces.

The Result

The community moved from an aging mesh-dependent wireless system to a modern design supported by hardwired access points, upgraded core switching, and concealed cabling. The result was better network performance across priority areas and a cleaner installation with no visible cabling or power at the access points.

The assessment also gave the property a clearer understanding of its WAN, LAN, WiFi, switching, and cabling infrastructure—creating a better foundation for ongoing support and future expansion throughout the five-story community.
